Summary

Don't get me wrong; this is one of my favorite series/authors。 My expectations were HIGH。 The author went even more epic in scope this time， expanding the story in time instead of in worldbuilding/space。 I think this was the issue for me， actually- 20 years of time pass， and so a lot is elided。 Characters are born and grow up and I sort of wished I could have seen more of them。 Hilo and Wen's children are the obvious heirs to the No Peak clan and will be extremely powerful in their own right but Don't get me wrong; this is one of my favorite series/authors。 My expectations were HIGH。 The author went even more epic in scope this time， expanding the story in time instead of in worldbuilding/space。 I think this was the issue for me， actually- 20 years of time pass， and so a lot is elided。 Characters are born and grow up and I sort of wished I could have seen more of them。 Hilo and Wen's children are the obvious heirs to the No Peak clan and will be extremely powerful in their own right but didn't do all that much in this book。 So。。。。 maybe a new trilogy that shows what the next generation can do？ This book caught up to the era of cell phones and if the next generation takes it into the future， well that would be a lot of fun too。 Because of the scope of this book， political shifting and cultural change became a focus。 I wanted more specifically about jade。 I love the concept of bioenergetic jade， but the individual effect that jade has on those who can or can't tolerate it was pushed to the side in this book in favor of a less fantastic， more intrigue and power play sort of story。 Hilo， Shae， Wen all age 20 years in this book， taking them into middle age。 How does that effect their jade or other abilities？I don't want to say too much about the plot because the book's release date has been pushed back and I don't want to be too spoilery。 I'll just say that even with the larger scope， there were still several kick-ass fight scenes and a few confrontations that I couldn't see how to resolve without ending the book suddenly and right there， but the author pulled out more of her tricks and took the story in unexpected directions。 Most of the characters are just a bit wiser and a bit less hotheaded as they get older， but they still have their blind spots and flaws。 A good gangster saga is always going to end in a rain of bullets， of course， and I spent a lot of the book worrying over who would end up dead。 Some deaths I expected and their tragic and epic nature made me mourn， and some came out of the blue and stunned me so that I had to go back and read the scene over and over。 So， I liked this book。 I probably wanted more of it。 I wanted to slow down and spend more time with the characters instead of hurtling forward through time。 I wanted even more fight scenes， more family relationship drama and more time wandering around Janloon。 I hate when great things come to an end and hope that maybe this isn't the end after all？ 。。。more

Brilliant， simply brilliant。 This is easily one of my all time favorite books， series finales， and overall series。 This was a masterclass in worldbuilding， pacing， and characterization—not a hyperbole: a masterclass that every fantasy author should read and study to see what a feat writing such a series this is。

Actually， I feel like it's not enough to give it 5 stars。 It's 10/5 for me。 I honestly don't want to contain it into a numerical rating because it has completely left me speechless。I never would have thought that I'd be greatly invested in a book filled with clans and gangsters with the interwoven dynamics of violence， politics， and familial turmoil。 When I first came upon Jade City， I had a hard time getting invested in the story since the genre isn't really my cup of tea。 But The Green Bone S Actually， I feel like it's not enough to give it 5 stars。 It's 10/5 for me。 I honestly don't want to contain it into a numerical rating because it has completely left me speechless。I never would have thought that I'd be greatly invested in a book filled with clans and gangsters with the interwoven dynamics of violence， politics， and familial turmoil。 When I first came upon Jade City， I had a hard time getting invested in the story since the genre isn't really my cup of tea。 But The Green Bone Saga completely changed that， especially with the exceptional writing， characterization， and world-building of Miss Fonda Lee。 Jade Legacy is an epic， mind-blowing conclusion to the GBS series。 I couldn't put it down， I read every chapter with bated breath。 I laughed， screamed， cried， and most of all felt kinship with the characters that accompanied me over the course of three books。 I could not point out any flaw in this book （maybe it’s just me being biased） but it's just so well executed for me。 Every scheme， every decision， every hatred from the characters were so well-founded; you can really understand why they did what they did。 Thank you very much for crafting such a well-rounded， gripping， and emotional book Miss Lee。 It reminds me of the importance of family; how it is not only determined by blood relations， but also found in people we've bonded over the years。 This book is truly a LEGACY that will live on！ 。。。more

I think this book made some changes from the previous one that made it a lot easier to tell when time passed， which is very good considering it took place over 20 years。 However， I think the nature of that sometimes slowed down the book a lot and made it feel more episodic。 Of course， this didn’t stop me from sobbing several times。An excellent conclusion to the trilogy。

and specifically this book - is unmatched in its world-building and use of international politics to move the plot。 I've yet to encounter a fantasy world that feels as real as the one we enter in the Green Bone Saga， that incorporates international relations and conflict， ethnic stereotypes， different structures of government， political and religious ideologies， and national and international history the way this one does。 Each setting is distinct and fully actualized， with unique and rich cultures that interact and clash， and getting to explore this world more in the third installment of the series was riveting。 These aspects are not only present but exist as driving forces that move the plot and characters through their respective arcs。 Seeing the ways that all of these factors shaped the lives of the characters， as well as the way they interacted with one another， was unbelievably cool， and made the setting feel so much more realistic。 No one writes politics like Fonda Lee。 This book is also unique in the broad timeline it covers。 The series spans decades， giving the reader an opportunity to see the long-term impacts of decisions made throughout the characters' lives。 The flow of the story is not interrupted by the jumps in the timeline， and the payoff of getting to see the plots that began in the first book come to fruition is well worth the set-up。 By drawing this story out， Fonda Lee shows us the gradual process of change， the small things that can impact us years down the road， and how we never really get over some things， no matter what we think。 This extended timeline allowed Fonda Lee to effectively use this book as a mirror， reflecting back a fantasy version of a society that mimics ours in the most important ways， and that we can learn from。I don't say this lightly， but I also do not hesitate to say that the Green Bone saga is the best-written series I have ever read。 Fonda Lee is a master of the art of storytelling， and the Green Bone Saga is a work of art that will one day stand with Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire as classic staples of the fantasy genre， of this I have no doubt。 Sometimes， if you're really lucky， you read a book， and it's as if a piece of you that has been living apart from you for years finally returns home。 And this will be a book you hesitate to recommend。 A book you want to keep to yourself。 Because to share it would be to share a part of yourself that has been missing for so long you aren't ready to let it out into the world again just yet。 This is the book that is written on your soul， the book that feels like it's been waiting for you。 For me， the Green Bone Saga is one of those rare books。 I hope it will be for you， too。 。。。more

The clan is our blood， and the Pillar is its masterRating: Absolutely Loved ItSeries Rating: All-Time FavoriteThis was my most anticipated release for the second half of the year， and it 100% lived up to my expectations！ This was such a satisfying ending to the Green Bone Saga。 I feel like there isn't a ton that I can go into without spoilers， but I'm going to give it a go。 There will definitely be spoilers for the first two books on here SO TURN AROUND IF YOU HAVEN'T READ JADE CITY AND JADE WAR The clan is our blood， and the Pillar is its masterRating: Absolutely Loved ItSeries Rating: All-Time FavoriteThis was my most anticipated release for the second half of the year， and it 100% lived up to my expectations！ This was such a satisfying ending to the Green Bone Saga。 I feel like there isn't a ton that I can go into without spoilers， but I'm going to give it a go。 There will definitely be spoilers for the first two books on here SO TURN AROUND IF YOU HAVEN'T READ JADE CITY AND JADE WAR！What I liked:- Everything。 Haha， but for real。 There was very little that I didn't enjoy in this。 - I wasn't expecting it， but this book covers a HUGE span of time。 I think it covers 20ish years， give or take。 I don't know that I've experienced such a long amount of time in one book， and I was skeptical at first， but I ended up really liking it。 It felt like it was needed in order to wrap it up the way it did。 - I LOVE these characters。 The development of all the Kauls is phenomenal throughout this whole series。 I felt like we got more characterization for the kiddos and other side characters。 Overall， Hilo is still my favorite， but I really love Anden and Wen too。 Also Niko is fantastic。 Even Ayt Mada was excellent， she is a freaking diabolical villain。- Despite covering such a long period of time， this was excellently paced。 I was never once bored or waiting for the end of an arc。 This one also felt more political。 I'm not sure if that is true， but they were excellently done。 I love all the inner workings of the clan。 - DISABILITY REP！ Whooohooo！ And this time it was a main character！ After surviving her Traumatic Brain Injury， Wen has to go through years of therapy in order to reach a level of functioning that is similar to her performance prior to the injury。 Even after going through all the therapy， Wen still often has difficulty getting her words out and will have a limp when she gets tired。 I also loved seeing Hilo and Wen work through all the ramifications of this （and the breach of trust in Wen working clan business） in their relationship。 - There were some things in this that were incredibly painful， but I love the fact that this is a series with STAKES。 I heard Fonda Lee say in an interview a while back that she wouldn't answer who her favorite character was in case people would think that gave them a free pass to survive。 I will say that I kinda love that。 I was terrified for all the characters at different points， and that is part of what made it so compelling for me。 - I felt that the ending was incredibly satisfying for this series。 There were times that I was concerned about where everything was going， but it definitely stuck the landing。 What I didn't love- One specific storyline of Shae's at the beginning。 It involves one of my least favorite tropes ever。 However， it resolved fairly quickly， so I ended up being okay with it。 - This one didn't have a huge pivotal event in the middle。 I thought the pacing was still excellent， and there were a bunch of smaller events that moved the story throughout the years。 I just still remember Jade City's shocking twist in the middle that was such an "oh sh*t" moment and a somewhat milder one in Jade War。 I don't think this detracted from the story at all， it was just different。 - I don't think I had anything else on my list。 It was an excellent ending to a phenomenal series。 I have so many more thoughts and feelings that are mostly incoherent， but I think I hit the big points。 Overall， I just love this series and the characters and am rather emotional about it ending。 I want to say a HUGE thank you to Orbit Books， and Angela Man in particular for the ARC of Jade Legacy in exchange for an honest review。 This is definitely high up on my list of favorite completed series， and I look forward to reading more by Fonda Lee。 Jade Legacy releases on Tuesday November 30， so there is plenty of time to catch up on the series before then if you haven't read it already！ 。。。more

Review for Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee A huge thank you Orbit for the sending me a copy to review！ My Thoughts Oh wow， okay。 Where do I even begin？Let’s start with the fact that this is now one of my all-time favorite series， and I think everyone should read Jade City if they haven’t already。I’ve had to take a couple of weeks to collect my thoughts because this book had so much packed into it， without it ever feeling overstuffed。 Lee has a mastery in writing compelling characters to be so rea Review for Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee A huge thank you Orbit for the sending me a copy to review！ My Thoughts Oh wow， okay。 Where do I even begin？Let’s start with the fact that this is now one of my all-time favorite series， and I think everyone should read Jade City if they haven’t already。I’ve had to take a couple of weeks to collect my thoughts because this book had so much packed into it， without it ever feeling overstuffed。 Lee has a mastery in writing compelling characters to be so realistic that you feel like you could meet them the next time you’re out running errands。 But this book is so much more than just the characters。 Usually， if a book excels in character work， it lacks in plot， but there is nothing lacking here。 The plot has you so wrapped up in thinking “What could possibly happen next？” and then getting your soul crushed because something horrible just happened to one of your favorite characters。 Fonda Lee knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat。Kekon feels so realistic， with its own rich culture that is built upon in the previous books， and seems to come to full fruition in this finale。 The magic system weaves in perfectly， and it is also the pillar of the society and the politics in this world。Jade Legacy spans about 20 years and is truly about the legacy of the Kaul family。 There were a few plot points that truly took my breath away， and quite frankly stressed me out due to what was happening to the characters。 A few moments stand out in my mind where the reader is simply waiting for the dominos to fall， but you aren’t exactly sure how everything is going to end up。 That being said， this book truly destroyed me。 It was emotionally draining due to the stress of not knowing if my favorite characters were going survive or not， and not knowing what was around the next corner。 However， all of that was completely worth it。 I respect and enjoy how Lee chose to end this saga， and the Kaul family will always hold a huge place in my heart。 I really love this world and this family， regardless of how morally ambivalent they may be。I will absolutely be picking up whatever Fonda Lee writes in the future， and I can’t wait to watch others read this book and truly “Go through it” like I did。 Overall （TLDR） If you've read the other two bones in this series， go into this one knowing that your emotions will be played with and tested。 BUT， this ending is absolutely perfect for the series， and the read is more than worth it。 This series is in my favorite of all time now， and I'm so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to read an early copy。Thank you as always to Orbit for the copy to review！ This has in no way altered my opinions。Go read this， and then find me on Instagram and Twitter！InstagramTwitter 。。。more
